OptoSapiens Design (OSD) represents Photon Design whose key products, described in more detail at www.photond.com, are:
- FIMMWAVE - robust mode solver suite.
- FIMMPROP - field propagator - optional add-on to FIMMWAVE.
- CLADISS-2D - active device simulator for laser diode/TWA design (Fabry-Perot, DFB, DBR, tunable, external cavity lasers, SOAs, ...).
- HAROLD - adds detailed heterostructure and material modelling to CLADISS.
- CrystalWave - mask layout editor together with a powerful 3D FDTD propagation engine and an ultra-fast frequency domain for photonic crystals.
- OmniSim - efficient design tool for fast omindirectional propagation.
- Kallistos – state-of-the-art multi-parameter design optimization tool for drastically reducing the design cycle times for photonic devices.
FIMMWAVE includes the most robust optical waveguide mode field solvers on the market. It is fully vectorial and with the complex engine option can solve for the modes of bent waveguides.
- FIMMPROP based on the semi-analytic Eigen-Mode Expansion (EME) approach provides significant advantages over alternative approaches such as the Beam Propagation Method (BPM).
These include speed (very fast for optimization) and full bidirectionality taking account of back-reflections whilst being fully vectorial – rigorous Maxwell equation solver so that large index differences (such as occur for photonic crystal fibers and semiconductor waveguides) and wide-angle propagation are not problematic. It is ideal for optimizing structures such as fiber and photonic integrated circuits involving tapers, y-junctions, s-bends, gratings and many other features.
Furthermore EME is an approach which brings out the physics of electromagnetic field propagation making it ideal for enabling students to gain a deep understanding of potential performance.
It is particularly appropriate that OSD support Photon Design with FIMMPROP sales given that the OSD founder worked intensively for a decade in academia on waveguide modes exploiting EME for diverse photonic devices such as modal interferometric components including tapered and coupled structures.
CLADISS-2D is probably the fastest laser CAD tool on the market: the model is based on a multi-section, multi-contact framework with a fast time-domain engine, and sophisticated data visualization.
CrystalWave when tested for full 3D propagation in photonic crystal test structures has proven faster using less memory than any other commercially available product.
